Local Tories force a massive increase in gypsy pitch numbers

12.00.00am GMT Sun 27th Jan 2008

Three Rivers residents face a massive SEVENFOLD INCREASE in the number of local gypsy pitches, after a recent vote at the East of England Regional Assembly (EERA).

A Liberal Democrat amendment, which would have led to Three Rivers getting just two extra pitches and Watford four, was supported by all LibDem representatives. However Conservative county councillor Derrick Ashley, Hertfordshire's planning supremo, was the main speaker in favour of the motion which gives both authorities an extra fifteen pitches each.

LibDem Cllr Richard Struck, Three Rivers' representative on EERA, voted in favour of the smaller allocation, as did Watford Mayor Dorothy Thornhill.

In reaching their decision, the assembly overturned their own expert planning advice. This said that Three Rivers is one of three councils that could not provide more sites due to green belt constraints. Research has also shown little demand from travellers themselves for extra pitches here.

Cllr Sara Bedford said, "It is quite wrong to redistribute gypsy site provision away from areas of identified need. Even the gypsy and traveller community recognises that this has 'alarming undercurrents and would set a dangerous precedent'. Councils are required to address the housing needs of all members of the community, both settled and travelling, and all should be treated in the same way".

Leader of Three Rivers District Council, LibDem Ann Shaw said, "Whatever the Conservatives may say, when they have a chance to vote they do so in favour of more local gypsy sites and against the interests of local residents".
